AFTERSCHOOL, SUMMER, AND OTHER EXPANDED LEARNING PROGRAMS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN NEW YORK.
Afterschool programs are an essential part of our education system and a lifeline to New York’s families. These programs are not only engaging kids in real-world learning projects and helping them do better in school, they are also keeping young people safe and preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow. Families rely on afterschool because it helps parents keep their jobs and connects caregivers to resources in their communities.
Afterschool programs are in high demand across the state, however,
State funds are inadequate to meet this demand.
Current afterschool grantees have experienced extreme fiscal and structural barriers with these funds, making it difficult to sustain programs and/or seek these funds.
Many children and youth who would participate in a program are unable to due to a lack of availability and access.
New York has taken some promising steps to change this, but much more needs to be done. The recent state FY23-24 budget that passed in April 2023 provides $92 million, an addition of $4+ million, to fund New York's two major state afterschool programs and moves funding to the administering agency, Office for Children and Family Services (OCFS).
We are fighting for sustainable afterschool investments and better processes to provide safety, more learning, and more opportunity for all our children! Learn more below.
